Avery benched, Rangers lose - 4-24-09

Hockey is a funny game. You can have someone on your roster taking selfish penalties that force your goaltender to withstand an offensive onslaught by the likes of Alex Ovechkin. But despite all that, you can still win games. That's the case with the Rangers and Sean Avery (above). They had a 3-1 series lead against the Capitals in their first round series.

Well, after having seen enough of Avery's antics, New York coach John Tortorella has benched Avery for Game 5 in Washington. The result? A 4-0 win for Washington.

As if the humbling loss wasn't bad enough, Tortorella tried to attack a fan with a stick:
