The Flames officially fired head coach Mike Keenan (above) today. The team went 88-60-16 in two seasons under Keenan and reached the playoffs each campaign. Both of those seasons ended with exits in the first round.
With a trade deadline acquisition of forward Olli Jokinen this season, the Flames were seen by some as a contender for the Western Conference title.
EN Says: Keenan's a good coach, but he underachieved in Calgary. He had some elite talent on his roster in the form of Jarome Iginla, Miikka Kiprusoff, Robyn Regehr, Dion Phaneuf and Jokinen but couldn't figure out a way past a first-round exit at the hands of Chicago.
This was Keenan's eighth stop in the NHL. GIven how coaches are recycled in this league, don't be surprised to see Keenan, 59, behind someone's bench once again.
