Oilers hire Quinn, Renney - 5-26-09

The Oilers made a shrewd move today announcing the hirings of Pat Quinn (right) as head coach and Tom Renney as associate head coach. Quinn takes over for Craig MacTavish who was fired after this past regular season.

Quinn, who was rumored to be a midseason replacement for former Penguins coach Michel Therrien, last coached in the NHL with the Maple Leafs in the 2005-06 season. He has also coached the Canucks, King and Flyers in his career compiling a record of 657-451-154-26. He is one of six coaches with at least 600 win in NHL history.

Renney coached the Rangers for parts of the past fives seasons. During his time on Broadway, he ended a seven-year playoff drought for the Rangers and led them to the postseason for three consecutive seasons. He has also coached the Canucks during his NHL tenure. His career record is 203-170-9-46.

EN Says: Nice moves by the Oilers. Both coaches have been successful in the NHL and Quinn preaches an aggressive style which should suit the Oilers organization well. The organization has always been one that likes to play offense and that shouldn't change under Quinn.

It'll be interesting to see how this dynamic works. How much imput with Renney have in final decisions for the Oilers? Or does Quinn have final say on everything?
