Two-timers - 5-27-09

The Penguins have a chance at a little bit of history. Should they be able to claim the Stanley Cup, they will make Pittsburgh one of four cities/markets to claim two championships in the supposed four "major" sports leagues within the same calendar year at least twice. (If you can follow that) Right now, Pittsburgh is one of six cities to have pulled off at least once:

Year City/Market First Team Second Team
2004 Boston Patriots Red Sox
2002 Los Angeles* Lakers Angels
2000 New York** Devils Yankees
1989 San Francisco/Oakland* 49ers Athletics
1988 Los Angeles Lakers Dodgers
1979 Pittsburgh Steelers Pirates
1969 New York Jets Mets
1956 New York Yankees Giants (NFL)
1952 Detroit Red Wings Lions
1938 New York Yankees Giants (NFL)
1935 Detroit Tigers Lions
1933 New York Rangers Giants (MLB)
1928 New York
Rangers Yankees
1927 New York Yankees Giants (NFL)

We're assuming Pittsburgh won't be the first city to pull off a three-peat within the same year.

**-We know any self-respecting Devils fan would puke at the idea of being lumped in with New York teams, but if the Giants and Jets can play their "home" games in New Jersey, the Devils can be considered a New York team.

*-Ditto with the Los Angeles/Anaheim and San Francisco/Oakland dynamics.
