Beyond mean

Written by Rosa Colucci on .

I support my friend Mike Stout's position against UPMC's decision to abandon Braddock hospital ("Stand Up to UPMC's Community Divestment," Jan. 26 letters). I have sought and received good treatment there a number of times, as a resident of the East End. I find UPMC's behavior in this situation to be duplicitous and mean-spirited.

A hospital is more than just a cost center or a line item in a budget. It is a regional asset -- one of the few remaining in historic, once-proud Braddock. UPMC, in pursuit of profit, is willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of the people in the Braddock catchment area because the people there don't count.

But then, greed blinds, doesn't it? Shame on UPMC.
