Let's lighten up

As an Italian-American, I can identify with David DeAngelo's Forum article last Sunday ("On Goombahs and Guidos," Jan. 24). Stereotyping is an ever-present, never-to-go-away part of our society. My suggestion would be that we rise above all the political correctness and, in most cases, the harmless words people sometimes use.

Intelligent people know of all the important contributions Italian-Americans have made to our society. It will take more than "Jersey Shore" to erase those. I say we lighten up and have a chuckle now and then, even if it's at our expense.
