More recent Murtha
Surely PG editorial cartoonist Rob Rogers must be joking. His Feb. 16 cartoon portrayed a hippie protester and a veteran both mourning the demise of U.S. Rep. John Murtha. I realize that Mr Murtha was himself a veteran, and for that he certainly deserves credit. However, Mr. Rogers seems to have conveniently forgotten or ignored Mr. Murtha's comments regarding the Marines in Haditha. I believe he referred to them as "cold-blooded" killers.
After his claims were proved to be false, Mr. Murtha stubbornly refused to apologize to the Marines involved in that operation. I do not doubt that throughout his career Mr. Murtha was involved in passing legislation that aided military veterans and their families. However, to look past some of his very recent comments and to portray him as solidly pro-military would be revisionist history.
Unfortunately, Mr. Murtha often appeared to be more concerned with partisan political tactics than he was with ensuring the welfare and the success of our troops.
