A filth mind-set

Regarding "Students Aren't Taking Couch Ban Lying Down" (March 19), discussing Pittsburgh's ban of indoor couches on porches: One students said, "How about the trash in the street?"

This reminds me of a trip to Athens in 2007. It's a city and a metropolitan area with twice the population of Sixburgh. We were there for several days yet never found one piece of trash in the streets. To us it was revealing.

Trash in the streets comes from a state of mind: Does the person with trash to toss care about the looks of the city? In the case of Pitt students the answer is too obviously "no." And this is echoed by them taking couches off porches and burning them in the streets. Quit your griping and clean up your act.
