U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, points to a rail study by HDR Inc. that states there would be enough riders to support a New Kensington-Pittsburgh rail line but it would have to be subsidized ("Rail Line From New Kensington to Pittsburgh Being Studied," April 20). He also says it is unclear who might pay the subsidy.
If it has to be subsidized, there are not enough riders.
When it comes to the government, subsidy is just another word that means the taxpayer pays. The government can only spend money it takes from the taxpayer. Every taxpayer knows or should know that the ultimate bill payer in this country is the taxpayer. Rep. Altmire should be honest and forthright with the taxpayers and "tell it like it is."
