Help others sprout

Written by Rosa Colucci on .

I enjoyed Sally Kalson's May 19 article "Sprouts on Top." When she pointed out that Highmark reported that it saved $330,000 last year from its green initiatives including green roofs and later in the article reported that the main barrier to green roofs is cost, I had an "a-ha" moment.

Let's ask Highmark and Heinz and other big companies that are saving money from their green initiatives to make that savings available in the form of grants to small businesses and individuals who otherwise could not afford to install green roofs. The big companies would bask in the glow of having done good deeds, the small companies and individual homeowners would benefit financially, and our city and region as a whole would benefit environmentally.
