Creative education

Written by Rosa Colucci on .

I read the July 1 article "Paddle Tale" about Kiski Prep students making their own kayaks, and I pass on my praise to teacher Andy Scott for providing his students with an original, fully involved educational experience that will no doubt be one of the main things they take from their high school years.

This is what education is about, and I am so glad that Mr. Scott trusted his students to be able to handle such a creative and complex project and took the patience and time to pass on the knowledge of a traditional craft as well. School systems can print walls of "rubrics" identifying the stages of student accomplishments, but they become amazingly banal compared with watching one's labors manifest into something as unique as a kayak.

I hope other teachers have read his story and will take a moment to think about that one new project that will lead their students through a successful year this coming fall.
