Hillside memories

Written by Rosa Colucci on .

The Aug. 5 article by Gene Scott about the steps in Pittsburgh, particularly the 56th Street Steps in Lawrenceville, really brought back some memories. I recall counting, over and over, first the wooden steps and later the cement ones. My mother, who is 92 years old, has spoken more than once about the day, when nine months pregnant, she fell between the wooden steps.

In addition to running up and down the steps, I enjoyed doing flips over the railings. Mr. Scott's recollection of having used cardboard boxes to slide down the grassy hill adjacent to the steps brought back one of my fondest memories of having lived on the hill.

We moved away from Pittsburgh when I was only 5 but looked forward with excitement when our yearly visits to relatives there meant climbing, once again, the steps and "sledding" in summer. Thanks for the memories.
