Uplifting idea

Written by Rosa Colucci on .

My thanks to Gene Scott for his great nostalgic story about the 56th Street Steps ("A Pittsburgher's Personal Calvary: Climbing the 56th Street Steps," Aug. 5). Mary Ban, a longtime former resident of Lawrenceville, called it to my attention.

I recall the many wooden steps with their landings in between on my way to Peabody High by bus and was thankful that I lived on Butler Street (above our baker shop in the 52nd block). I appreciated the information Mr. Scott included about federal grant funds that will be used for repair of the steps, including several other city stairways. It would be nice if a lift could be provided for those who cannot manage the steps and yet are dependent on reaching their destination from their hillside homes.
