As for me, an aspiring thoughtful soul, I did not retire to solitude but spent New Year's Day at a party in Edgeworth convened to watch the Rose Bowl. Our host was a former linebacker for Penn State, now a doctor, whom I believe later spent the evening in solitude after Penn State's decisive defeat.

It is true, however, that in 2009 my old desires are revived and they take the form of wishing to return to more commentary in this space. My blogging has lately been intermittent not because I was away from work but because I was extremely busy covering those who were smart enough to be away from work.

Now we are pretty much back to normal. Happy New year to all. Let the pontificating begin anew.
