Pennsylvania has no standards to guide the teaching of sex education throughout the state currently. The Healthy Youth Act, House Bill 1163, would set minimum standards for sex-education instruction in Pennsylvania public schools. Our teens need to know this kind of information. Our teens should not graduate from high school smart and civically engaged but without knowledge that could shape, if not save, their lives.
They may know how to write a persuasive essay or ace a math test but may not know how to protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. Teens need real sex education just as much as, if not more than, they need reading, writing and arithmetic.
