Joe Letteri ('The Hobbit' and more) talks Oscars and New Zealand summer

When the cameras weren't rolling yesterday in the PG Studio, I asked guest Joe Letteri if he waits up for the announcement of Academy Award nominations, which this year come on Jan. 10.

Nah, he said. In New Zealand, they come in the middle of the night. The senior supevisor of visual effects for Weta Digital ("Jurassic Park," "Avatar," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Lord of the Rings," "The Hobbit," to name a few of his movie credentials) and his family were ending their visit to his hometown in Aliquippa tomorrow - weather permitting - for another promotional stop for "The Hobbit" before returning to New Zealand. It's summer there now, he mentioned, although it was at least sunny fo his visit Downtown yesterday.

He displays just one of his four Oscars, on the mantle - the traditional place, he said.

Visit for a video and more.
