Pittsburgh rapper/activist Jasiri X will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the Chicago Theological Seminary on May 13 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

The degree is given to those who embodied the seminary's core value of “transformative leadership toward greater justice and mercy in church and society.”

Jasiri, whose real name is Jasiri Oronde Smith, is a political rapper, founder of 1Hood and an activist who travels across the country doing seminars and reporting from hot spots like Ferguson, Mo., and Occupy New York. He is being honored for shaping hip-hop in a positive light and working for social justice in the community.

On Friday he will be joined by colleagues including African-American feminist, theologian, and author Dr. Jacquelyn Grant.

"It is an extremely humbling experience to be honored in a similar fashion as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who also received his honorary doctorate from the Chicago Theological Seminary,” Jasiri said in a statement. “The CTS bestowing their highest honor, Doctor of Letters is a spiritual confirmation, of sorts, that in my efforts, I am doing something right."
