Mr. Smalls makes list of The 100 Greatest American Music Venues

MrsmallConsequence of Sound has published a list of The 100 Greatest American Music Venues that will require you flipping through 10 pages to discover that Pittsburgh has … one.

Mr. Smalls in Millvale, ranking No. 53 on the list, is described as “a saving grace for a Pittsburgh music scene that has always been desperate for sustainable midsize venues.”

The entry was written by Pittsburgh native Matt Melis, who likely endured the closing of Club Laga in Oakland. That was after we lost Graffiti, the Decade and the Electric Banana, all onetime contenders for a spot based on character and history (Decade and Banana), if not production quality (Graffiti).

ATSA.T.S. at the Funhouse last weekStage AE, which excels in that area and is one of the rare venues with large indoor/outdoor spaces, doesn’t make the cut, maybe because COS hasn’t been there yet, maybe it lacks the history or funky character they’re looking for.

The list was made before Mr. Smalls even opened the new Funhouse club upstairs, which makes the converted church worthy of an upgrade.
