The Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra held its annual concerto competition on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Heinz Hall. Sixteen young musicians competed by auditioning at Heinz Hall before a panel of judges that included PYSO Music Director and PSO Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh, PSO Assistant Conductor Fawzi Haimor, and PYSO Executive Director Craig Johnson.

First place winner is harpist Sophia Lee from Wexford, who auditioned on Gliere's Harp Concerto and will subsequently perform that same piece as a soloist with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra on May 17, 2014 at Heinz Hall. Sophia is a tenth grader at North Allegheny Intermediate High School and is a student of PSO principal harpist Gretchen Van Hoesen.

Second place winner is violinist Julie Choe, also from Wexford, who auditioned on Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1. Julie is an eleventh grader at North Allegheny High School and is a student of Cyrus Forough of Carnegie Mellon University.
