The R-rated “Lucy” outmuscled the PG-13 “Hercules” this weekend at the box office. Credit Luc Besson, Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, positive reviews and maybe even early previews for critics, which didn’t happen with the Dwayne Johnson movie which has the benefit of 3-D in some theaters.

I bought a ticket for a 7 p.m. Thursday show of “Hercules” and was lucky that the movie was 98 minutes which allowed me to come back and write a quickie review.

Here are the top 10 according to Rentrak:

1. “Lucy” — $44,025,375.
2. “Hercules” — $29,000,000.
3. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” — $16,400,000, for $172,088,629 since release.
4. “The Purge: Anarchy” — $9,896,040, bringing its total to $51,272,185.
5. “Planes: Fire and Rescue” — $9,303,000, for $35,121,000 so far.
6. “Sex Tape” — $5,975,000, for $26,876,532 so far.
7. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” — $4,600,000, bringing its total to $236,352,475
8. “And So It Goes” — $4,551,687.
9. “Tammy” —  $3,400,000, nudging its North American gross to $78,147,089.
10. “A Most Wanted Man” — $2,717,425.

“Maleficent” crossed $700 million globally, becoming Walt Disney Studios’ second release of 2014 and the 15th release ever to reach that threshold.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak, said recently  on his blog, that the summer of 2015 looks like it may be the biggest on record and the first to cross the $5 billion revenue mark.

He wrote:  “With a kickoff film like the ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ plus ‘Jurassic World,’ ‘Ted 2’ and even a ‘Despicable Me’ spinoff — ‘Minions’ —  it is likely that a year from now we will be gratefully talking about a 20 percent increase over 2014.”
