'Gravity' holds firm to No. 1 spot

Riding a wave of good word of mouth and reviews, “Gravity” starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney soared past “Captain Phillips” in its second week of release. 
 
It grossed an estimated $44,265,000, bringing its total so far to $123,399,919, according to Rentrak. 
 
“Captain Phillips,” starring Tom Hanks in the true-life story of the pirate takeover of the Maersk Alabama, grossed roughly $26 million. 
 
Here are the weekend estimates (updated at noon): 
 
1. “Gravity” — $44,265,000, for $123,399,919 since Oct. 3.
2. “Captain Phillips” — $26,000,000.
3. “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2” — $14,200,000, for $78,036,677 since release. 
4. “Machete Kills” —  $3,797,000.
5. “Runner Runner” — $3,725,000, for $14,113,958 so far. 
6. “Prisoners” — $3,665,000, for a gross of $53,619,879. 
7. “Insidious Chapter 2” — $2,650,000 or $78,447,017 to date. 
8. “Rush” — $2,364,300, or $22,201,569 since release. 
9. “Don Jon” — $2,340,000, or $20,141,150 so far. 
10. “Baggage Claim” — $2,075,000, or $18,272,478.
