“Avatar” isn’t quite in “Star Wars” territory yet but it is getting close, with plans for not two but three sequels.
Entertainment websites report 20th Century Fox and James Cameron now plan three additional movies.
Variety says Mr. Cameron will collaborate with screenwriters Josh Friedman (“War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planets of the Apes”), and Shane Salerno (“Savages,” “Salinger”) on the screenplays for “Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3,” and “Avatar 4.”
In what sounds like an organizational puzzle and challenge of the highest order, the three movies will be filmed simultaneously. They will be released in December of 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Mr. Cameron really is king of the box office, with “Avatar” and “Titanic” the all-time top grossing movies in North America and the world.
