“Monsters University” hung onto the top spot at the weekend box office, picking up another $46,180,000. That brings its North American total to an estimated $171,006,000.

“The Heat” — a movie that would seem to defy box-office expectations with its R rating and two female leads (you rarely see that today) — was second with roughly $40 million, according to hollywood.com. Above, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in "The Heat."

Still to come are the rest of the top 10 led by “World War Z,” “White House Down” and “Man of Steel.”
