Monsters edge out zombies at box office

Monsters trumped zombies at the box office, and Mike and Sulley gave Pixar its second biggest opening ever, behind “Toy Story 3.” reports that “Monsters University” grossed an estimated $82 million this weekend while “World War Z” starring Brad Pitt (photo below) picked up $66 million. 
“Man of Steel” continues to fly high, adding another $41,215,000 to its running total, roughly $210,006,000 in North America. 
Here are the early box office estimates: 
1. “Monsters University” — $82,000,000.
2. “World War Z” — $66,000,000.
3. “Man of Steel” — $41,215,000, for $210,006,000 to date. 
4. “This Is the End” — $13,000,000, for $57,792,000 since opening. 
5. “Now You See Me” — $7,870,000, bringing its figure since release to $94,450,976. 
6. “Fast & Furious 6” — $4,725,000, for $228,413,000 to date. 
7. “The Internship” — $3,425,000, for $38,364,505. 
8. “The Purge” — $3,412,000, or $59,428,000 since arrival. 
9. “Star Trek Into Darkness” — $3,000,000, nudging its total to $216,611,000. 
10. “Iron Man 3” — $2,175,000, for $403,120,000. 
As always, final numbers will be released on Monday. 
Paul Dergarabedian of reports that “Monsters University” gives Pixar a perfect record, 14 of 14 features opening at No. 1 in wide release. This was the eighth highest opening in Disney history.
