“Man of Steel” set a June opening record with $125,080,000 (Thursday through Sunday estimate), making it the second biggest debut of 2013. The first is still “Iron Man 3,” launched in May into the stratosphere.

Hollywood.com reports the new Superman adventure earned roughly $113,080,000 Friday through Sunday with another $12 million from Thursday.

It stars Henry Cavill as Kal-El/Clark Kent and includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod, Russell Crowe as his birth father and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane (above) as Jonathan and Martha Kent, Kansas farmers who raise him.

Here is how that stacks up against other June openings, according to box-office expert Paul Dergarabedian:

“Toy Story 3” — $110,307,189 over three days, starting June 18, 2010.

“Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen” — $108,966,307 over five days, beginning June 26, 2009.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” — $93,687,367 for three days, starting June 4, 2004.

“Brave” — $66,323,594, also three days, from June 22, 2012.

“Man of Steel” picked up $13.3 million from IMAX showings.
