Oz sails above Kansas, box office

Pay no attention to those critics in front of the curtains.
They may have been lukewarm about “Oz the Great and Powerful” but moviegoers had no problem plunking down money to see it in 2-D, 3-D or IMAX.Early estimates from hollywood.com put its opening weekend gross at $80,278,000 in North America with almost another $70 million overseas, making for $150 million.
This makes it the third biggest March opening at the domestic box office, behind “The Hunger Games” and then “Alice in Wonderland.”
Here are the first numbers from the box office:
1. “Oz the Great and Powerful” — $80,278,000.
2. “Jack the Giant Slayer” — $10,020,000, for $43,811,000 to date.
3. “Identity Thief” — $6,319,210, for $116,530,095 since release.
4. “Dead Man Down” — $5,350,000.
5. “Snitch” — $5,100,000, bringing its total to $31,855,127.
6. “21 and Over” — $5,056,000, for $16,839,975 since opening.
7. “Safe Haven” — $3,800,000, or $62,884,097 since Valentine’s Day.
8. “Silver Linings Playbook” — $3,745,000, or $120,749,342 in 17 weeks.
9. “Escape From Planet Earth” — $3,207,000, or $47,832,182 since release.
10. “The Last Exorcism, Part II” — $3,120,000, or $12,082,599 in two weeks.
