Seventeen of the 20 nominees in the acting categories were expected among 160-plus nominees. Quvenzhane Wallis, 9, shook hands with Denzel Washington — this is her first Oscar season thanks to "Beasts of the Southern Wild," his sixth — and was greeted by Academy President Hawk Koch.
